and her MS and PhD from Ohio State University.
During her career at the CON, Margaret taught courses in research,
theory, perinatal physiology, and neonatal nursing, and she
directed the graduate program in advanced neonatal
nursing. Dr. Kinneer provided leadership as the Chair
of the Division of Primary Health Care for a number of years prior
to her retirement in 1999.
. Prior to her move to Colorado, Margaret's clinical practice
was in perinatal nursing; and she was on the faculty of Ohio State
University College of Nursing from 1978-1986.
Dr. Kinneer was a member of Sigma Theta Tau International and was
president of the Alpha Kappa Chapter at Large STTI 1992-4.
She taught nursing research in North Viet Nam two different years
with the Friendship Bridge Program
Friend and colleague, Martha H. Stoner, RN, PhD, said that she knew
Margaret had many and diverse interests, but she was amazed when
Billy provided specific information about all of Margaret's
activities. As a young mother she took up Judo and became a
third degree brown belt. Margaret became an ice dancer
in 1967 and worked her way though the levels. She achieved
Gold level with her son Andy as her partner in 1986. Margaret
began Square Dance lessons in Jan 1987 where she met Billy
Kinneer. They were married on 1 Aug 1987, and they continued
to square dance. When they were members of the "Classic
Dancer" demonstration team they performed at the National Squared
Dance convention in Salt Lake before 17,000 attendees. In the
early 1990's she began quilting and she had completed over 115
quilts and other projects including another 7 or 8 in
process. She also taught quilting in Colorado and New
Zealand. In 2004 Margaret took up bike riding again and took
part in a bike ride in Montana that was a loop from Bozeman down
though Yellowstone Park and back.. In 2006 she and her
daughter Karen were practicing for a trip to Prince Edward Island
when she crashed and broke her pelvis canceling that trip.
They rescheduled the trip for Sept 2007 and Margaret was riding 35
miles a day in preparation for the trip when the cancer was
diagnosed.
Margaret and Billy bought land in South Park and she took up and
was successful at deer and elk hunting. She also became good
at plumbing, electrical wiring and other home building skills as
they built a cabin on their land.
Margaret loved to travel and, in addition to Viet Nam she traveled
to England/Scotland. Canada, Mexico, Alaska, and Russia.
After their first trip to New Zealand in 2000 it became her real
love, and she and Billy returned for six more years for the three
months of Colorado winters.
Survivors include: her husband, Billy Kinneer, her daughters Diane
and Karen who live in the Columbus, Ohio area, her son Andy who

Member: Elizabeth (Lizzie) Anne Schaeffer
Teichler
February 2007
Elizabeth (Lizzie) Anne Schaeffer Teichler, RN, PhD, FNP, HCN,
died of ovarian cancer on January 13, 2007, in Louisville,
Colorado. A nurse, scholar, teacher, and athlete, her presence
among us will be sorely missed by the hundreds of lives she touched
through the years. She was born in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, the daughter of Louis Frederick Schaeffer and Eleanor
Cupitt Schaeffer. She attended Germantown Friends School, later
earning her B.S. in Nursing degree from the University of
Pennsylvania. She worked in many areas of clinical nursing, and
later earned a M.S. in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania,
where she also received that school's Florence Nightingale Award.
She received her Family Nurse Practitioner certification from the
University of Vermont. She taught as an Instructor in the School of
Nursing at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center from
1994 to 2000. In 2000, she was awarded her Ph.D. degree in Nursing
from UCHSC. Her most recent position was Assistant Professor of
Nursing at Beth El College of Nursing and Health Sciences,
University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, where she was Chair of the
Health Sciences Department and Director of both the Adult Nurse
Practitioner Program and the Sports Health Program. From 1994 until
2004 she served as the Family Nurse Practitioner at Brighton Senior
Center in Brighton, CO. She was an active member of several
professional organizations, including the International Association
of Human Caring, Sigma Theta Tau, the American Holistic Nurses
Association, AAHPERD, the Society of Rogerian Scholars, and the
Center for Human Caring/Caring Science. Locally, she was a past
board member and president of the Mental Health Center of Boulder
County. She was instrumental in founding the Boulder Aquatic
Masters, and served as the club's first president. The joy
she found in teaching nursing was equaled by her passion for
physical activity. Her nursing skills meshed with her love of
outdoor activity when she joined the ski patrol at Smuggler's Notch
in Vermont. After moving to Colorado, she also served on the ski
patrols at Copper Mountain and Eldora. Her greatest athletic love,
though, was triathlon. She got her start by competing in the New
England Triathlon Series, and then moved on to Ironman-distance
races, eventually completing 20 Ironman races, including 7 Ironman
Hawaii competitions. She also completed one Ultraman race in
Hawaii. Even after her schedule caused her "retirement" from the
sport, she continued to train consistently, encouraging others by
her example. During her four-year fight with ovarian cancer, she
would still exercise at every opportunity, visualizing cancer as
the most difficult endurance race of all. Though her
accomplishments were many, most people remember her for her warmth
and generosity. She actively lived her ideal of body/mind/spirit
connection, and passed that ideal on to others.
She is survived by her husband Rick of Lafayette, and her
sisters Connie Archer of Macungie, PA, and Edie Hamilton of
Chatham, MA. At Lizzie's request, a celebration of her life will be
held June 9, the month of her birthday and anniversary. Her favored
charitable organizations were as varied as her interests: in lieu
of flowers, the family suggests contributions can be made to any of
the following charitable organizations:• Ovarian Cancer Research
Fund • Wolf Haven International • Sinapu •
Heifer Project International • Hospice Care of Boulder and
Broomfield Counties.
