Lamp Lighters
A Mentoring Program for College Students with an interest in the Nursing Profession

We are in the midst of a serious crisis in nursing. How many nurses influence others to enter the nursing profession? This is a question that more nurses should ask themselves.

A needs assessment conducted in 2003 indicated that there is a need to provide college students with an interest in nursing a realistic but positive image of nursing to assist them in making informed decisions about their career path. A pilot project of a mentoring program was conducted 2004 - 2005 with nurse mentors from 7 health care facilities in Colorado and students from six academic institutions.

Specific objectives of this mentoring program are to:

  1. improve the image of nursing,
  2. develop leadership skills of students entering academic nursing programs,
  3. recruit more minorities into the nursing profession,  and
  4. support pre-nursing students during their often difficult academic pathway and acceptance process into a nursing program.

Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Chapter at Large and the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence are supporting the development and implementation of Lamp Lighters, a mentorship program designed to support college students interested in the nursing profession. This program pair’s professional nurse mentors with college students who are interested in the nursing profession but have yet to be accepted into an academic nursing program. The nurse mentor forms a mentoring relationship to support the student’s academic pathway to nursing and to assist the student to learn more about career opportunities in nursing.

This fall (2005) the Lamp Lighters mentoring program will be implemented in Denver with a limited number of participants. Our goal is to improve upon the outcomes based on the findings of  the evaluation of the pilot project.

We Need Your Help!
This is a critical time in the nursing profession when we need to take action. This is a time to reach out to students who have an interest in nursing and increase their awareness of the diverse career opportunities in our profession. We have created the Lamp Lighters project to help facilitate this need.  A vital part of the success of this project require that there are members of this chapter interested and willing to support this innovative project by being a mentor. This program offers members an opportunity to make a personal impact on the nursing shortage.  If we can count on you to help make this program a success, we need to hear from you.  Please tell us how you can help below.
