Lamp Lighters Nurse Mentoring program was initiated in 2002 in response to the shortage in the nursing workforce. This program was developed to provide a professional nurse mentor for college students with an interest in nursing. Lamp Lighters has been supported by the Alpha Kappa Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau and the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence. The specific goals for the program include improving the image of nursing, developing leadership skills of students entering academic nursing programs, recruiting more minorities into the nursing profession, and supporting pre-nursing students during their academic pathway and acceptance process into a nursing program.
