Extending an Inspiring Global Health Initiative

With more than 1400 members, Alpha Kappa Chapter-at-Large (AKC) is blessed with nursing knowledge, leadership, and financial resources to make a difference on behalf of STTI's global mission and vision. After learning of the chapter president's connections to a nursing school in rural Ethiopia, Region 3 Coordinator Chris Alumbaugh conceived a fundraiser in lieu of a reception at STTI’s Biennial Convention in November 2007. Called "We Walk the Walk and Make our $$ Talk," the fundraiser benefited Project CURE, an international relief agency that redistributes surplus medical supplies and equipment to 120 countries in need, including Ethiopia. AKC provided both chapter and personal contributions to this Region 3 initiative, which immediately inspired chapter leadership to extend and sustain efforts to improve the health of the world's people.

As a result, AKC sought to engage more deeply with Project CURE, the chapter president's primary site for community service. On March 4, the chapter president represented AKC at a welcome reception for the First Lady of Mexico. Many people in attendance had not heard of nursing's honor society and were intrigued to learn of nursing's global efforts. The next day, AKC hosted a chapter-sponsored table of 10 members and nursing students at Project CURE’s First Ladies’ Luncheon, a fundraiser for hospitals in the states of Chiapas and Tabasco, Mexico, which were devastated by floods in fall 2007. AKC contributed $1,000, and over $3 million were raised from sponsors and the record 1800 people in attendance.

Soon after, AKC sponsored two tables of 20 members and nursing students to continue fund-raising for Hossana Health Science College and Hospital. This fundraising event occurred on March 30, 2008, at Strings Restaurant in Denver, and AKC invited Chris Alumbaugh to come from Topeka to be a guest of honor for inspiring us. By collaborating with others, $20,000 has been raised, of which AKC contributed $3,700. This goal amount enables Project CURE to ship a cargo container of medical supplies and equipment worth $400,000 to benefit the college and hospital, including its nursing students, nurses, and patients.

The next day, March 31, 2008, the chapter president met with Chris Alumbaugh and Greg Cooke, Vice President of Project CURE, to brainstorm ideas for additional collaboration and service, which included opportunities for STTI members to volunteer in Project CURE's U.S. sorting centers. The chapter president, archivist, leadership succession co-chair, several members, and many nursing students already have done so at Project CURE's Denver warehouse.

Lessons and outcomes include: (a) one person like Region 3 Coordinator Chris Alumbaugh can inspire many, (b) AKC members view themselves as part of a global community of nurses, (c) AKC not only made direct contributions to global efforts but also increased STTI and nursing's visibility in the Denver metro area, (d) AKC officers and chairs have made an enduring commitment to serve periodically in Project CURE's sorting center, and (e) the impact on members and students was exponential because each one talked to many about how AKC has embraced STTI's global mission and vision.

Plans are underway to sustain AKC's global efforts: (a) members will send messages of encouragement to nursing students in Ethiopia to accompany Project CURE's shipment, (b) more members will have the opportunity to serve in Project CURE's sorting center, (c) AKC will support Project CURE's First Ladies' Luncheon next year and beyond, and (d) AKC will continue to collaborate on global efforts within Region 3.
